Lawrence General Hospital ranks in the top 2% nationwide on Lown Institute index of socially responsible hospitals

2022 study shows Lawrence General earns "A" in health equity, value, and outcomes.

When it comes to social responsibility, Lawrence General Hospital is proud to be recognized in the top 2% of hospitals nationwide, according to the prestigious Lown Institute, which released its 2022 list of America's Most Socially Responsible Hospitals on June 28. Lawrence General earned an "A" in the category of Social Responsibility, which reflects performance across categories including health equity, value, and outcomes.

"Earning this honor is certainly a proud moment for Lawrence General and reinforces our outstanding commitment to providing high quality care to people from across the Merrimack Valley community," Deborah J. Wilson, president and CEO of Lawrence General Hospital said. "Our mission is our passion, and while we celebrate our various honors and recognitions, our true inspiration and motivation comes from knowing we are providing the best, most equitable care to the people we serve."

Launched in 2020, the Lown Institute Hospitals Index for Social Responsibility draws attention to leading and lagging institutions nationwide and provides benchmarks for hospitals to measure how well they serve their patients and communities.

In total, the rankings include 3,606 hospitals — with less than 2% earning top marks across all categories. Metrics such as racial inclusivity of patients, employee pay equity, and avoidance of unnecessary and potentially harmful procedures are among the ways the Lown Institute evaluates hospitals as social institutions.

“Citizens put their lives and billions of tax dollars in the hands of America’s hospitals,” Vikas Saini, MD, president of the Lown Institute said. “We believe communities should have high expectations and the most socially responsible institutions should be lifted up as models for the system.”
