Comstar Ambulance Billing Data Security Breach Information
Comstar, LLC, the third-party ambulance billing company contracted by Lawrence General Hospital (LGH) and other organizations nationwide to provide ambulance/paramedic billing services, has informed LGH that on or about March 26,2022, Comstar discovered suspicious activity related to certain services within the Comstar IT environment, which was investigated and determined to be a cyber-attack with a potential breach of patient information.
  • The patient information involved in any potential breach of Comstar's data would include name, date of birth, medical assessment and medication administration, health insurance information and Social Security Number from the Comstar ambulance billing claim files.
  • The Comstar Ambulance Billing Company handles the billing claims and billing files for Lawrence General Hospital’s Ambulance, Paramedic and City of Lawrence Ambulance Services.
  • This breach reported by Comstar applies to Comstar's files and nothing on the LGH network has been compromised during this Comstar IT incident.
  • Comstar will send any affected patient a formal “Notification Letter” with instructions of how to apply for any free-credit monitoring and protections through Equifax; these will be sent in both English and Spanish.
  • Comstar will have a Call-in Center to handle all patient callers at (877) 587-4280 Monday through Friday from 9:00am-9:00pm Eastern time with Spanish interpreter services available
  • Free-credit protection will be offered by Comstar through Equifax by contacting the Call-in center, as noted above, and providing the reference number on the Notification letter.
  • Comstar has added strict security measures to prevent this type of IT incident from happening again
