FAQs

Why do I have to come for a pre-admission testing appointment?
At the pre-admission testing appointment, a surgical services RN will review your health history, medications and procedure with you. They will advise you what will happen on the day of surgery and instruct you about your post-operative course. Lab and/or diagnostic studies may be done at the direction of your surgeon at this time. Depending on the nature of your surgery, you may interview with a member of the Anesthesia Department.

Is it possible to complete pre-admission by telephone?
In some instances, this is possible. Routinely, the pre-admission staff contacts patients by telephone if appropriate. In the event that the pre-admission appointment is not needed, lab and/or diagnostic studies can be done out-patient at the patient's convenience.

I'm having outpatient surgery. What should I bring with me?
All valuables should be left at home including cell phones, Ipods, Ipads, laptops and jewelry (including piercings). You should wear or bring comfortable clothes to travel home in and make arrangements for transportation as well as someone to stay with you for at least 24 hours.

Can I stay with my child while they are having surgery?
Parents are encouraged to participate pre-operatively and post-operatively. In some cases, at the discretion of anesthesia, a parent may accompany their child to the OR suite until the patient is fully asleep. The parent will be reunited with their child when they wake up in PACU.

How do I know when to arrive for surgery?
LGH admitting staff will call you at home and let you know when to arrive. It is important that you keep the hospital appraised of any changes in contact information to make certain that you can be reached with important information.
