Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery (MITS) Clinic
The Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery (MITS) Clinic at Lawrence General Hospital was founded in 2010 to better serve the thoracic surgical needs of people in the Merrimack Valley and surrounding communities. Instead of having to travel long distances for this kind of specialized care, patients now can have consultations in a comfortable, relaxed, non-clinical, local atmosphere. The Clinic is open weekly on Wednesday morning in the Hospital's state-of-the-art South Pavilion.
The members of the treatment team include Drs. P. K. Poddar, Shalini Reddy and Erica Giblin of MITS Associates, three of the top physicians in the region. Their clinical expertise includes surgical treatment of lung and esophageal cancers, chest wall and mediastinal tumors, diseases of the pleura, chest wall and diaphragm, heart block and other disorders of the heart, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and more. In addition to the physicians, a Clinical Nurse Navigator and MITS Coordinator help coordinate the Clinic and oversee day-to-day operations. Patients are referred to the Clinic by their primary care physician or specialist.
The Clinic treats a wide range of minimally invasive and other procedures associated with the chest area of the body, including:
- Lung resections
- Pleruodesis and placement of PleurX Catheters for recurrent pleural effusions
- Decortication for Empyema
- Esophageal resection
- Laproscopic Nissen fundoplication
- Mediastinoscopy and resection of Mediastinal tumors
- Placement of pacemakers.
The experience of the staff and the advanced techniques available to them enable the Clinic to greatly benefit patients by decreasing the length of their hospital stay, minimizing post-operative pain and decreasing the time it takes for them to return to normal activity. Some length of stays can be reduced by 50% due to our minimally invasive procedures and technology.
