Maternal Child Health

We know childbirth is different and intensely personal for every woman, and we understand your need for comfort and your desire for privacy. You want to get through labor, then rest and relax while you get acquainted with your newborn. At the same time, you're eager to learn all you can about how to care for your baby.

Rest assured that every staff member in the Birthing Center at Lawrence General Hospital knows how special this time is for you and your family. We're committed to doing everything we can to make your experience better than you ever imagined. Given that more than 1,600 babies are delivered at Lawrence General every year, we've had plenty of practice. Plus, our Birthing Center enjoys the highest quality ratings by birth parents in the Merrimack Valley region.

Special Care Nursery

If your baby needs special attention, you'll be interested to know that our Special Care Nursery is designated a Level II program by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. That means we offer expert staff and the latest technology to care for babies who need an added level of support, including those born prematurely, twins and triplets, or infants with certain metabolic conditions. The nursery has 24/7 in-house coverage by neonatologists and pediatrics hospitalists from Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center, and all our special care nurses are RNs with advanced education in the treatment of infants.

Nothing is more joyous for parents than having a healthy, happy baby. Congratulations, again!

Support Groups

Mama2Mama (M2M) Support Group

Wednesday's - 10:30 am -12:00 pm
Russell Building, Second Floor, Maternity Solarium

Lawrence General Hospital offers a mother’s postpartum support group, Mama2Mama, every Wednesday between 10:30 am - 12:00 pm. This is a free group that meets weekly and requires no registration. The mothers in the group guide the discussion and we talk about a variety of topics from breastfeeding and formula feeding to developmental milestones. You may weigh your baby during the group and have questions answered on newborn feeding patterns, pumping, parenting and returning to work.

We support you with breastfeeding challenges and are staffed by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. As a group we support you through mothering challenges and are open to pregnant women, postpartum mothers, and the female support people in their life. Many mothers come to the main entrance where valet parking is available. You may also park in our visitor parking lot at the bottom of the hill. For more information, please contact our lactation consultant at 978-683-4000 ext 2370. (Please note: This group in canceled in the event of inclement weather when Lawrence Public Schools announce cancellations.)

Lawrence General hospital offers inpatient and outpatient breastfeeding support from an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. If you are experiencing breastfeeding challenges, we offer a bilingual care line 7 days per week for phone support. If needed, an appointment can be provided for an outpatient lactation consultation in the Birthing Center. During this appointment, our lactation consultant will provide an assessment and plan for breastfeeding challenges. Please call (978) 683-4000 x 2370.
