FAQs

What is a mammogram?
A mammogram is an x-ray of your breasts. Lawrence General Hospital offers fully digital mammography, which provides detailed images of your breast tissue. Changes in the breast often show up in mammograms long before you can feel them during a breast exam.

When should I have my mammogram?
The American Cancer Society recommends a baseline mammogram between the ages of 35 and 40, with routine mammograms recommended annually after age 40. Based on your personal and family medical history, your health care provider will determine how often you should have a mammogram.

This is my first mammogram. What do I need to do to prepare?
On the day of your mammogram, we suggest wearing a two-piece outfit so you only need remove your top for the exam. Please don't wear deodorant, talcum powder, lotion or other substances under your arms or on your breasts.

What will the exam be like?
The mammography technologist will position your breast on the imaging unit where it will be gently compressed. This may be uncomfortable, but is not painful. At least 2 views will be taken of each breast. It is a very quick procedure.

You will receive a letter within a few days giving you the results. A copy will also be sent to your physician.
